Message From Tony Hau, Chairman
As the region begins to recover from SARS and business confidence
returns, we are seeing a pick-up in business activity and the
resumption of travel in Hong Kong, Singapore and China. On the
telecommunications front, China Motion has emerged from the
restructuring of our business with a stronger corporate position and
focus on growing our three core businesses - telecommunications
networks,
mobile-related services, and retail and distribution.
As you may have seen from our annual results announcement, China
Motion Telecom performed well last year. We increased turnover to
HK$735.6 million (S$165.8 million) and saw a profit turnaround for
the year ended March 2003.
While we expect positive full-year results for 2004, we remain
cautious about upcoming interim results ending September 2003.
The SARS outbreak, for one, had a slight impact on our retail
business in the first quarter of this financial year. In our Mobile
Virtual Network Operator business, fierce competition in Hong Kong
affected service plan tariffs, and resulted in a lower-than-expected
growth in subscribers. China Motion Telecom is also currently
negotiating with telecom operators in China to reduce the
interconnect charges* for transferring traffic over their network.
The rates are expected to be finalised only in the last quarter of
this year, so there is still uncertainty for our next interim
results to reflect any impact from the new rates. However, we expect
our full year performance for 2004 to show positive results overall.
Above all, we remain encouraged by our accomplishments in the past
year. China Motion had achieved yet another milestone with the
launch of the world's first Tri-SIM mobile service in June.
Developed by our mobile-related services division CM Mobile, this
service saves travelers to Hong Kong, Singapore and China the
trouble of switching between SIM cards once they leave their host
country. Callers from the three locations can reach users at their
respective local mobile numbers through just one SIM card.
Going forward, we plan to leverage the synergies of our three core
businesses to strengthen our flagship brands - ChinaOne, CM Mobile
and CM Concept. We will continue making inroads into China through
our strategic partners, and will expand our services to Vietnam,
South Korea, Australia and the UK.
We look forward to another year of growth, and thank you for your
support.
